How to Get to Mutianyu from Beijing
There are five practical ways to reach Mutianyu from Beijing. Choose based on your budget, time and how much convenience you want.
Route 1: Tourist Shuttle / Direct Bus — Easiest and Most Recommended
This is currently one of the most popular and cost-effective choices for independent visitors because it offers a direct trip to Mutianyu without changing buses in Huairou.
Main operators and departure points:

BusDa (巴士达): departures from places including Heping Xiqiao Metro Station Exit B and Dengshikou Metro Station Exit C. Departures are frequent, generally from around 07:00 until 12:00. For more information. Call 400-600-4330

ZANBUS (赞巴士): departs from Dengshikou Metro Station Exit C, near the Regent Beijing parking area. Typical departures are 08:00, 09:00 and 10:00. For more information. Call 010-64448522

Beijing Tourist Distribution Center: a convenient official direct-bus option with several pickup points.
- Departure points & times: Qianmen (continuous departures 07:00–11:00); Dongzhimen Subway Station Exit H (09:10); Shaoyaoju Subway Station Exit E (09:30).
- Return: continuous departures 13:00–16:00 from Mutianyu Parking Lot P4.
- Price: ¥80 per person round trip. Public Transport IC cards and free-admission credentials/passes are not accepted.
- Tickets: buy when boarding; sales normally begin 30 minutes before departure and continue until the bus is full. Tickets are also available on site at the Tourist Distribution Center / Qianmen ticket counters.

Beijing Public Transport Tongyou Line 31: departs from Wangjing West Transport Hub. This service normally operates only on public holidays, with a departure around 09:45. Advance reservation is required, and the service operates when the minimum passenger requirement is met.
Travel time: about 1.5 hours one way, depending on traffic.
For a first independent visit, this is usually the easiest balance between price and convenience.
Route 2: Public Transport — Cheapest Option
This is best for budget travelers who have more time and are comfortable using Beijing public transport.
Route:
- Go to Dongzhimen Transport Hub.
- Take Bus 916 Express to Huairou Beidajie (怀柔北大街).
- At the same area, transfer to H7/H23/H24/H35/H50 toward Mutianyu Huandao (慕田峪环岛).
The 916 Express ride is usually around 1.5 hours, and the H23 connection normally takes another 30-40 minutes.
Total travel time: approximately 2.5-3 hours one way, and longer if you have to wait for a connection or encounter traffic.
This is the cheapest route, but I would not choose it if Mutianyu is the main attraction on a short Beijing stay.
Route 3: Private Tour — Most Flexible
This works well for families, groups and visitors who want full control over departure and return time.
Route:
Drive along the Jingcheng Expressway (京承高速) and leave at Exit 13, Beitai Road (北台路), then follow the signs toward Mutianyu Great Wall.
Distance: roughly 70-80 km from central Beijing.
Travel time: about 1.5 hours when traffic is light.

Route 4: Suburban Railway — Best for the Train Experience
This is a more experiential option for travelers who enjoy train travel and have a flexible schedule.
Route:
- Go to Huangtudian Station, near Huoying Metro Station.
- Take the S5 Suburban Railway / Huairou-Miyun Line (怀密线) to Huairou North Station.
- After arriving at Huairou North, take a taxi or ride-hailing car to Mutianyu Great Wall.
The train journey to Huairou North is about 64 minutes. The final car transfer normally takes another 30-40 minutes, so allow extra time for the connection.
This route can be enjoyable and avoids part of the highway journey, but it is not door to door.
Route 5: Taxi / Ride-Hailing — Most Convenient Door to Door
This is the simplest point-to-point option.
Book a taxi or use a ride-hailing app from your hotel or current location directly to Mutianyu Great Wall.
Travel time: normally around 1.5 hours, depending on traffic.
It is usually more expensive than the direct tourist bus or public transport, but it avoids fixed departure times and transfers. For two or more travelers, the price difference may also feel more reasonable.
Practical Tips That Save Time
Start earlier if you can
During busy periods, the biggest time loss is not always walking — it can be toilets, ticket checks, shuttle queues and waiting for cable cars.
The scenic area currently opens from 07:30 in peak season, so an early arrival gives you a much better chance to start walking before the main late-morning rush.
If I had the choice between arriving around opening time and arriving close to 10:00, I would choose the earlier arrival.
Carry water and a small snack
Do not carry a heavy backpack, but bring enough water for your planned walk. Food and drinks are available in the visitor/service areas, but choices on the Wall itself are more limited and usually more expensive than in central Beijing.
Sun and grip matter more than fashion
In summer:
- hat
- sunglasses
- sunscreen
- breathable clothing
After rain or in winter:
- shoes with good grip
- slower pace on steep stone steps
- an extra layer because the ridge can feel much colder and windier than central Beijing
Check These Things the Day Before You Go
Mutianyu is an outdoor mountain attraction, and operating conditions are not completely fixed.
Check:
- the current open watchtower section
- weather and visibility
- temporary repair or safety closures
- cable car operation
- chairlift/toboggan operation
- current opening hours
- your ticket/reservation status
- the return time for any tourist bus you booked
- whether any seasonal night-tour arrangement affects the day you plan to visit
This matters especially after heavy rain, snow, strong wind or during maintenance periods.
That is enough for a memorable Great Wall visit. You do not need to turn Mutianyu into an endurance challenge.
